Scones a very British afternoon snack consumed with a delicious cup of tea. I love eating them and baking them. The first time I baked them I was around 10 years old. I was at school in my Home Economics class and I thought what is this simple cake like thing and once I had them with strawberry jam I was hooked!
I have no idea where scones originate from nor what the name means. I know that they taste super yummy especially when you are far from home… ie London .
Here is the recipe ;
Ingredients
2 Cups of flour
4 tsp of baking powder
Pinch of salt
¼ Cup of sugar
6 tablespoon butter (soft / room temp)
2/3 cup of milk
1 egg
(You can add sultans or raisins to the mix if you wish)
Method
1- Preheat the oven
2- In a large bowl put the flour, baking powder, salt and sugar and combine well
3- Add the soft butter to the mix, the texture should be sand like.
4- In a separate bowl whisk the milk and egg.
5- Add the wet ingredient to the dry mixture and mix well until it becomes a dough.
6- Transfer the dough into a floured surface and knead for no more than 10 minutes.
7- With a cutter cut circles. You can use a sources or anything round, too large but medium size.
8- Place the cut circles on parchment paper or greased oven try.
9- Brush the scones with a bit of egg mix and place in the oven for 15 minutes or when they are golden brown on gas mark 7 which is around 200C
Serve with clothed cream and strawberry jam to get the best taste !
